Why I Chose Coaching as My Path of Service (Even When My Resume Made No Sense)

Why I Chose Coaching as My Path of Service (Even When My Resume Made No Sense)

What Do You Want to Do Next?

When Your Life Doesn’t Fit in a Resume Box

If you’ve ever struggled to answer that question — not because you lack passion, but because you’ve done so much — this is for you.

I’ve been asked it countless times:

“What’s next?”
And for years, my answer felt like a lie, or worse, a vague evasion:
“I’m figuring it out…”

Because how do you explain that you’re multi-passionate, multi-talented, and have a lived experience that could fill volumes — but none of it fits neatly on a LinkedIn profile?

The Résumé That Lives Between the Lines

What do you put on a resume when you’ve spent a lifetime surviving — and thriving — in unconventional ways?

How do you quantify growing up as an immigrant child, translating for your illiterate mother, raising siblings at six years old, navigating life through grit, instinct, and emotional intelligence?

You can’t exactly bullet point:

  • Learned to map-read with an atlas

  • Navigated early adulthood alongside the dawn of the internet

  • Mastered sales, people skills, and adaptability behind a bar and in restaurants

  • Self-taught every tool from spreadsheets to branding via YouTube

These aren’t “hard skills” — they’re life skills. They're the currency of self-taught wisdom, of what it means to figure things out when no one’s coming to save you.

When Success Still Feels Like Failure

Despite all of that, I carried a story. That I wasn’t enough.

Why? Because I didn’t graduate college. A belief handed to me by my mother — who believed education was the only way out. And when I left a six-figure real estate career to focus on my family, that inner voice whispered again:

“You’re failing.”

Even though I made the decision from a place of love. Even though I chose presence over hustle. Somehow, choosing my life — my children — felt like choosing mediocrity.

But one thing always remained clear:

I wanted to serve.

So What Do You Do With That?

How do you serve with a resume made of lived experience, not degrees? What does resilience, grit, adaptability, emotional depth, and fierce loyalty translate to?

It turns out: everything.

That’s what my coach — and eventually my coaching certification — helped me see. They didn’t just teach me how to coach. They held up a mirror to my already existing magic.

We’re all coaches in some form. Every time you reframe a friend’s thinking… offer insight to someone struggling… pass along a lesson you learned the hard way…
You are holding space. You are coaching.

The Gift I Didn’t Know I Had

Coaching, at its core, isn’t about credentials. It’s about seeing someone — fully. It’s about saying:

“I got you. You’re not broken. You’re not alone. You’ve just forgotten your power.”

I had forgotten mine.

I was so busy surviving that I stopped recognizing how far I’d come. I thought achievement would heal the void. But achievement without fulfillment? That was my trap.

No teacher, no boss, no system had ever asked me if I felt fulfilled. Only if I was performing.

No wonder I was disillusioned by my own success. I had mistaken productivity for purpose.

Rewriting My Identity

I carried silent labels like:

  • Uneducated

  • Poor

  • Immigrant

  • Just a mother

  • Someone’s wife

They stuck to me like invisible ink. Always present, always dimming my shine.

Until one day, I reframed my entire life.

I began to see it for what it really was:

A heroic, sacred journey of becoming.

I was a girl born in Mexico. I survived adversity most wouldn’t imagine. I built a life, married my best friend, raised my kids with love, and kept my heart open — always.

My nickname has always been “Momma” — gifted to me long before I had children. I took care of friends like family. Fed them. Encouraged them. Held them when they fell apart.

I had been a coach long before I ever had a certificate that said so.

Claiming the Path That Was Always Mine

That’s why I chose coaching.

Because it chose me first.

Because every twist, turn, failure, and hard-earned lesson was always pointing me here — to a life of service, of storytelling, of helping others wake up to their own light.

Now, I dream of speaking on stages, sharing these truths far and wide. Of launching a podcast. Of inspiring others to peel back the layers of “not enough” and discover their soul’s truth.

And always, I’ll still be Momma — to my people, my community, my clients. Not just a coach. But a sanctuary.
